011 - Maj’s Sparrows

Sparrows are very social birds often nesting in colonies.

I was very excited coming home knowing that Maj (my mother) has always had a few robins out back. I didn't know that since I’d left, the hedgerow had become home to at least 50 sparrows. I woke up at 7:30 am and found the sparrows were waking up just outside my window too. There’s been a bittersweetness to being back in my childhood bedroom. I love my friends, family, and the Irish countryside with all my heart, but as the sun sets at half 4 in the ‘evening’, it's hard not to think about all the reasons I left, and all the hardship I went through growing up. But the sun still rises, even if it's behind a thick layer of grey clouds, and now the sparrows sing too. Thanks, little buddies.

Artist: All The Luck In The World
Track: Killing Season

I knew coming home the first song I’d have to use would be from the lads themselves, All The Luck In The World. I remember being asked by a friend in Logroño why they were my favourite band, to which I answered “I hear their songs and listen to all the subtle notes and sounds you can hear in the background”. I still do this with their latest singles and old albums, and I’m always finding little pieces of the mix I hadn't heard before. Their music is a gift that just keeps giving. Thank you for the music.
